3G Mobile Data

At the time of writing (2007-03-27) 3G mobile data is virtually unusable.

If you are desparate and there is no other solution then a 3G card might be the answer.

This report from ZDNet almost exactly represents my findings after 12 months with an Orange card.

For the record there are many ways that the Mobile Operators can improve their service:

  • Write nice drivers and software - make it available online - EASILY
  • The current software is skinned up to almost unusable and so complex that you are lost if you need to reinstall or reload. (Just about the ONLY good thing about MS Windows is the simple and consistent user interface so the kids skinning your app to make it better are either arrogant or stupid)
  • Put a good, sensitive, signal strength meter in that records like the system monitor in Windows so you can see what you are getting and adjust accordingly.
  • Make it easy to tell if you are getting 3G or GPRS and make it possible to lock it to one or the other
  • Publish the IP ranges you connect the phones on so we can add an extra security layer
